What are gross motor skills?
Gross motor skills are the movements that use the body's large muscles — the whole-body actions like rolling, crawling, walking, running, jumping, climbing and throwing or catching a ball. They give children the strength, balance and coordination to sit at the table, keep up in the playground, join in at kindy and take part in family life.
Every child develops in their own way and at their own pace. When these big movements are tricky, a paediatric physiotherapist can help work out what's going on and build a plan that grows your child's confidence and participation — one step at a time.
From first rolls to running and ball skills
A few of the gross motor skills we help children build. Ages are a general guide only — children reach these in their own time.
Rolling
Often a baby's first taste of moving on their own — building the core strength and coordination that everything else grows from.
Around 4–6 monthsCrawling
Getting up on hands and knees to explore. Crawling builds shoulder, core and hip strength that supports later skills.
Around 7–10 monthsWalking
Pulling to stand, cruising the furniture, then those first independent steps toward a whole new view of the world.
Around 12–18 monthsRunning
Faster, more confident movement — with the balance and control to stop, start and change direction safely.
Around 2 yearsJumping
Two feet off the ground and landing steadily — a big step for leg strength, timing and coordination.
Around 2–3 yearsClimbing
Up the ladder and onto the play equipment — building strength, planning and confidence at the playground.
Around 2–3 yearsBall skills
Throwing, catching, kicking and rolling a ball — coordination and timing that help children join in games with friends.
Developing across 2–5 yearsAnd everything in between
Balance, posture, hopping, stairs, bike riding and more. If a movement is tricky, we're happy to talk it through.
Every age & stageWhen it might help to chat with a physio
There's no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your child's development. You know your child best — if something feels like it's taking extra effort, we're here to listen and help you make sense of it.
It might be worth a conversation if you've noticed your child:
- Isn't yet rolling, sitting, crawling or walking around the usual times
- Seems to tire quickly, or finds big movements harder than their peers
- Often trips, bumps or struggles with balance and coordination
- Avoids climbing, jumping, running or ball games at the park or kindy
- Has low muscle tone, or a diagnosis such as developmental delay or cerebral palsy
