Physiotherapy

Active play and sport confidence

Some children hang back at the edge of the game. Not because they do not want to join in, but because the running, catching and dodging feel harder for them than for everyone else, and hanging back is safer than getting it wrong in front of friends.

Our registered paediatric physiotherapists help children across Ipswich and Springfield build the skills and the confidence to take part. We work with access, empathy and hope, starting where your child is and making the next step feel possible rather than daunting.

What you might be seeing

  • Your child avoids sport, PE or the playground, or asks to sit out
  • They say they are no good at running, catching or ball games
  • They play happily one-on-one but hold back in a group
  • Skills come more slowly than for their friends, and they notice
  • Confidence has dropped after a difficult experience at school or a club
  • They tire faster than others and lose interest partway through

How our physiotherapists help

We separate two things that often get tangled together: the physical skill and the confidence to use it. On the skill side we break activities into achievable pieces and build the running, jumping, catching and changing direction that most games rely on. On the confidence side we make sure your child experiences success early and often, because nothing rebuilds willingness to try like actually managing something they thought they could not. We work towards a goal your child cares about, whether that is keeping up at lunchtime or joining a local club. This runs alongside our work on strength, balance and coordination within our physiotherapy for kids service.

What sessions might look like

Sessions are active and deliberately fun. We might practise a skill in isolation, then fold it straight into a game so it has a purpose. We often rehearse the exact situations your child finds hard, like being thrown a ball unexpectedly, so the real thing feels familiar. We keep the difficulty where success is likely but not guaranteed, because that is where confidence actually grows. You will get ideas to practise at home, and we will talk about how to approach clubs or PE if that is the goal.

Frequently asked questions

My child says they hate sport. Will they cooperate?

Often yes, because sessions do not look like sport. We start with games your child enjoys and build skills inside them. When something starts to feel achievable, willingness usually follows on its own.

Is it too late if they are already in primary school?

No. Children keep building movement skills well into the school years, and older children can often understand and practise more deliberately. What matters most is finding a goal they care about.

Do you help with joining a club or team?

We can. If that is the goal we work towards the specific demands of that activity and talk through how to approach coaches, trials or first sessions so the transition feels manageable.

Want your child to feel part of the game?

We’ll partner with you to create a plan that works for your family — with access, empathy and hope.
