Physiotherapy
Strength, balance and coordination for children
Behind every skill your child performs sit three quiet building blocks: strength to power movement, balance to stay steady, and coordination to put it all together smoothly. When these foundations are still developing, everyday things like standing on one leg, riding a bike or getting up from the floor can feel like hard work.
Our registered paediatric physiotherapists help children across Ipswich and Springfield strengthen these foundations so movement feels easier and more automatic. We bring access, empathy and hope to every session, focusing on your child's strengths and building steadily from there.
Signs you might notice
- Your child seems to tire more quickly than others during active play
- They wobble or lose their balance on uneven ground, stairs or a beam
- Movements look clumsy, and they bump into things or drop items often
- They find two-sided tasks tricky, like pedalling, star jumps or swimming
- They slump or lean when sitting, or ask to be carried a lot
- Learning a new physical skill takes longer and needs more practice
How our physiotherapists help
Rather than drilling one activity, we target the underlying strength, balance and coordination that make many activities easier at once. We assess how your child controls their body, then design playful exercises that gently challenge the right systems, so their muscles get stronger and their movements get smoother and more reliable. We progress the challenge as they improve and share practical home ideas that fit into your everyday routine. This joined-up approach runs through our physiotherapy for kids, giving children a steadier base for whatever they want to do.
What sessions might look like
Expect movement games rather than a gym workout. We might use wobble boards and stepping stones for balance, animal walks and climbing for strength, and clapping or ball games for coordination and timing. Sessions can run in our Springfield clinic or in your home or kindy, wherever your child feels most at ease. We adjust the level so your child feels stretched but successful, and we watch closely for the moment a tricky task starts to click. You will finish with clear, simple activities to keep building between visits, and we check in on progress so the plan keeps pace with your child.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from working on specific skills like running?
Skill practice targets one movement, while strength, balance and coordination are the foundations that support many movements. Strengthening the foundations often helps several skills improve together, and it can make learning new activities faster and less frustrating for your child.
Can these areas really be improved with practice?
Yes. Strength, balance and coordination all respond well to the right kind of practice, especially when it is fun, regular and pitched at the correct level. Our physiotherapists find that level for your child and adjust it as they grow stronger and steadier.
Will this help with sport and PE?
Often, yes. A stronger, better-coordinated base tends to make active play, PE and sport feel more achievable, though we always tailor goals to what your child wants to be able to do.
Ready to build a steadier foundation?
We’ll partner with you to create a plan that works for your family — with access, empathy and hope.
