Motor milestones and when to seek help

Motor milestones are the movement stages most children pass through as they grow, from holding their head steady and sitting, to crawling, pulling to stand and walking. They are a helpful guide rather than a strict timetable, and every child follows their own path. Still, if a milestone feels a long way off, it is natural to wonder whether to wait or to ask for advice.

Our registered paediatric physiotherapists help families in Ipswich and Springfield make sense of motor milestones and decide the next step with confidence. We work with access, empathy and hope, offering honest, reassuring guidance whether your child simply needs time or a little extra support.

Signs it may be worth seeking help

  • Your child is noticeably behind peers in reaching a movement stage
  • They are not using both sides of their body evenly, or strongly favour one hand very early
  • A skill they once had seems to have faded rather than grown
  • They feel unusually floppy or stiff when you hold or move them
  • Your instinct tells you something is different, even if you cannot pinpoint it
  • Your GP, child health nurse or educator has suggested a review

When to seek help and how we support you

There is no need to wait and worry. Early guidance is often reassuring, and where support is helpful, starting sooner gives your child more time to grow. We assess your child's movement carefully and explain, in plain terms, whether their progress is within the expected range or would benefit from a plan. If milestones are lagging, this may point to developmental delay, and we can support you through what that means and what comes next. Everything we do sits within our broader physiotherapy for kids service.

What a first visit might look like

A first visit is a relaxed chance for us to watch your child move, hear your observations, and answer your questions. There is no rush, and you know your child best, so your everyday examples help us build a full picture. We can see you in our Springfield clinic or come to your home or kindy where your child feels comfortable and moves most naturally. You will leave with a clear picture of where things stand and, if needed, simple next steps, with no pressure to commit to anything before you are ready.

Frequently asked questions

My child is a bit behind but seems happy and healthy. Should I still book?

A check can be worthwhile for peace of mind alone. Often we can reassure you that your child is developing well within their own timeframe. If a little support would help, we can start early, which is usually the best time to make gains.

Does a missed milestone mean something is wrong?

Not necessarily. Milestones are a guide, and many children reach them in their own order and time. A physiotherapy assessment helps tell the difference between normal variation and a delay that would benefit from support.

Do I need a referral before seeing you?

No referral is needed to book privately, and you do not need a diagnosis to start. If your child has an NDIS plan or a Medicare care plan, we can talk you through those options too.

Not sure whether to wait or ask? Let's talk.

We’ll partner with you to create a plan that works for your family — with access, empathy and hope.
