Muscle tone differences in children

Muscle tone is the gentle background tension in your child's muscles when they are at rest. Some children have lower tone and can feel floppy or tire easily; others have higher tone and can feel stiff or tight. Neither is your fault, and neither defines what your child can go on to do.

Our registered paediatric physiotherapists work with children across Ipswich and Springfield whose tone makes everyday movement harder. We bring access, empathy and hope to every session, building strength, comfort and participation one step at a time.

What you might be seeing

  • Your child feels floppy to hold, or slips through your hands when lifted
  • They tire quickly and prefer to lie down or lean on furniture
  • Their muscles feel tight or stiff, especially in the legs or arms
  • They sit in a W shape, or avoid positions that need holding still
  • Movements look effortful, or one side of the body works differently to the other
  • Milestones like sitting, crawling or walking are taking longer

How our physiotherapists help

We start by working out how your child's tone is affecting the things they want to do, because two children with the same label can need very different support. For lower tone we usually build strength and endurance so positions can be held for longer without fatigue. For higher tone we focus on comfort, range and ease of movement so effort goes into the activity rather than fighting the muscle. Either way we keep it playful, and we show you what to carry over at home. This work sits inside our broader physiotherapy for kids service, and where tone relates to a diagnosis such as cerebral palsy we coordinate with your wider team.

What sessions might look like

Sessions are active and unhurried. We might work on holding a position through a game, practise moving between positions, or use equipment to make a hard task achievable. We watch how your child responds and adjust as we go, because tone can vary with tiredness, excitement and growth. You are part of every session, so you leave knowing what to practise and why it matters. We review regularly and change the plan as your child grows.

Frequently asked questions

Will my child grow out of it?

Tone itself often stays part of how your child is built, but what changes is how well they can work with it. Strength, technique and confidence all improve with the right support, and many children go on to do everything they want to do.

Do we need a diagnosis before starting?

No. We work from what we can see and what you tell us. If a diagnosis exists we will factor it in, and if questions come up during assessment we can help you work out who else to talk to.

Is this the same as strength training?

Not quite. Strength is part of it, but so are positioning, movement patterns and comfort. We build a plan around your child's particular pattern rather than applying a standard programme.

Want to talk it through?

We’ll partner with you to create a plan that works for your family — with access, empathy and hope.
