Posture and core stability

Core stability is the quiet strength through the middle of the body that lets a child sit upright at a table, stay steady on a bike, or hold a position long enough to finish what they started. When that strength is still building, sitting still can be genuinely tiring rather than simply a matter of concentration.

Our registered paediatric physiotherapists work with children across Ipswich and Springfield on posture and core stability, so sitting, standing and moving feel easier. We bring access, empathy and hope to every session, and we start from what your child can already do.

What you might be seeing

  • Your child slumps, leans on the table or props their head on a hand
  • They slide out of their chair, or sit on their feet to get more support
  • Sitting on the mat at kindy or school is hard to sustain
  • They tire quickly during seated tasks like drawing or eating
  • They fidget or change position constantly, which can look like inattention
  • Balance tasks and standing on one leg feel harder than for their friends

How our physiotherapists help

We look at how your child holds themselves across the day, not just in one position, because a posture that works at the table may fall apart on the floor. From there we build the deep trunk strength and endurance that make upright positions sustainable, and we work on the timing that keeps a child steady when they reach, twist or move. We also look at practical things like chair height and table setup, which can make an immediate difference. This sits within our wider physiotherapy for kids service, and often runs alongside work on strength, balance and coordination.

What sessions might look like

Expect games rather than exercises. We might use balance boards, crawling games, animal walks or obstacle courses that load the trunk without your child noticing they are working. We keep the challenge at the level where effort is fun rather than defeating, and we build endurance gradually so gains hold up through a whole school day. You will leave with two or three simple things to try at home, and we adjust the plan as your child gets stronger.

Frequently asked questions

Is slouching just a habit?

Sometimes, but often it is the easiest way for a child to rest when holding upright is hard work. If posture improves when your child is fresh and collapses when tired, that points to endurance rather than habit, and that is something we can build.

Could this be why my child cannot sit still?

It can be part of it. A child who keeps shifting may be searching for a position they can hold comfortably. Building core stability often makes sitting easier, though attention has several causes and we will be honest about what physiotherapy can and cannot influence.

How long does it take to see a change?

It varies with age, starting point and how often practice happens. Many families notice small changes within a few weeks, with endurance continuing to build over months. We review regularly so you can see what is shifting.
